Garuda Indonesia CEO to lose job over smuggled motorbike.
The CEO of Indonesia’s national airline is being fired over allegations he smuggled a classic motorbike into the country.
A Harley-Davidson motorbike and two folding bicycles were found on board a brand new A330neo arriving from Toulouse, France.
Garuda Indonesia CEO, Ari Askhara, is accused of trying to evade tax on the Harley-Davidson worth 800 million rupiah ($57,000).
When the items were discovered, other Garuda officials first claimed they owned the cargo. They could also face charges if they were found to have made false statements.
According to reports, the payment for the motorbike was made through a Garuda finance manager based in Amsterdam.
“This process was done completely within a state-owned company, not only by an individual,” State-Owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir said.
The ministry would continue to investigate the matter, Thohir said.
The airline’s cabin crew union IKAGI welcomed the decision to remove the CEO.
