Indian police get creative with lockdown punishments.
As punishment for breaking lockdown rules, police officers in India are reportedly making tourists write out lines on paper.
Writing lines is a form of punishment typically handed out to misbehaving students by people in a position of authority at schools.
According to reports, tourists have been ordered to write out “I did not follow the rules of lockdown so I am so sorry” 500 times.
The news comes as six foreign tourists were found living in a cave for a month near Rishikesh in Uttarakhand state, northern India.
The four men and two women – from France, the United States, Ukraine, Turkey and Nepal – say they ran out of money when India’s nationwide lockdown came into effect.
Rishikesh was made famous by the Beatles, who came to Rishikesh in 1968 looking for refuge from Beatlemania and to experience Indian culture.
Indian police have already made headlines with its punishments for those who flout lockdown rules.
Videos posted online show offenders holding their ears while doing deep squats as the police watch on.
In other videos, police officers can be seen chasing members of the public in the streets with long canes in hand.
India’s lockdown was due to be lifted on April 15, but has been extended to at least May 3.
