90% of Irish feel US tourists who break quarantine rules should be jailed.

According to a poll carried out by a popular newspaper, a huge proportion of the Irish public believe US tourists refusing to adhere to Ireland’s quarantine rules upon arrival should be jailed.

Under current Irish government rules, visitors to Ireland from certain countries are expected to self-isolate for a minimum of two weeks.

The poll comes after there were numerous incidents of US tourists openly flouting the 14-day quarantine rule in different areas of the country last weekend.

According to reports, restaurants and tour companies have been turning away groups of Americans after the visitors failed to prove they had been in the country for longer than two weeks.

In response to the poll, many Irish Twitter users took to the social media platform to share their opinions.

“Why on earth are people allowed into our country from the USA, the country with the worlds worst response to Covid-19?” one user asked.

“Just stop them coming in full stop. We’ve all worked hard to fight this. It’s people s lives at risk here.” another said.

The increase in concern is due to the alarming rate coronavirus cases continue to rise in the US.

Sunday marked the 41st straight day that the seven-day average for new daily coronavirus infections in the United States trended upward.

Last week it was reported that the state of Florida alone recorded a higher number of daily cases than all of Europe combined.
