Japan Airlines said it will punish a flight attendant for drinking champagne on duty, following an internal investigation.

An investigation by Japan Airlines found that one of their flight attendants drank a mini bottle of champagne while on duty at 37,000 feet.

The unnamed employee failed two breathalyser tests during a flight from Tokyo to Honolulu.

The woman denies she was drunk and claims the reason for the failed test was because she used mouthwash multiple times throughout the flight.

According to the report, three crew members said they smelled alcohol on the attendant’s breath and four more reported that she had been behaving unusually.

Airline President, Yuji Akasaka, and head of cabin attendants division, Eri Abe, will each take a salary deduction for one month, 20 and 10 percent respectively, to take responsibility for the incident.

In November, Japan Airlines moved to update its rules on drinking alcohol after its pilots have been caught over the limit whilst on duty all too often.

A Japan Airlines pilot was sentenced to 10 months in prison after he was found almost 10 times over the alcohol limit when tested 50 minutes before a flight from London to Tokyo.
