JetBlue is requiring all passengers to wear face coverings during flights.

JetBlue Airways has become the first US airline to make wearing face masks compulsory for its passengers.

The new policy by the New York-based airline, which comes into effect May 4, applies during check-in, boarding, while in flight and deplaning.

JetBlue flight attendants have been wearing masks since April 19.

“Wearing a face covering isn’t about protecting yourself it’s about protecting those around you,” said Joanna Geraghty, JetBlue’s president and chief operating officer, in a press release.

“This is the new flying etiquette. Onboard, cabin air is well circulated and cleaned through filters every few minutes but this is a shared space where we have to be considerate of others. We are also asking our customers to follow these CDC guidelines in the airport as well.”

There is no information as to what type of penalty a passenger will incur if they refuse to cover their mouth and nose when asked to do so.

Canada appears to be a step ahead of the US in flight safety moves as the coronavirus crisis continues.

Last week, the Canadian Minister of Transport imposed an nationwide rule, announcing that all travellers must wear masks on all flights.
