189 people are feared dead after a Lion Air Boeing 737 passenger plane crashed into the sea in Jakarta.

 

A Lion Air plane carrying 189 people from Jakarta crashed into the Java Sea shortly after take-off on Monday.

 

Flight JT 610, on a 1 hour and 10 minute flight to Pangkal Pinang, ran into problems minutes after departing Soekarno–Hatta International Airport.

 

Local media report there is no sign of survivors.

 

The pilots made a request to air traffic control to return to base about 12 miles out from takeoff, but did not indicate there was any emergency.

 

Air Lion’s CEO Edward Sirait said the plane, had reported problems the night before on a flight from Denpasar to Jakarta.

 

Engineers had allegedly checked and repaired the problem and reported that the plane was ready to fly.

 

The incident is reported to be the first major accident involving a Boeing 737 Max – an updated version of the 737.
