Malaysian authorities have arrested two Indians for attempting to smuggle over 5,000 turtles into the country.
Two men have been arrested after attempting to smuggle over 5,000 turtles into Malaysia.
Customs agents found a total 5,255 red-ear slider baby turtles from the luggage of two Indian nationals who flew in from Guangzhou, China on an AirAsia flight last week.
The men did not have any permits for the turtles which were expected to be flown on to India and be sold as pets.
The men, aged 30 and 42, could face up to five years in jail and a hefty fine.
Officials also caught another two Indian nationals trying to smuggle 14 kilograms of methamphetamine, hidden in special compartments in boxes.
One of the men flew from Hyderabad on 19 June, whilst the other flew from Bengaluru on 20 June.
The men are expected to be charged and face the death penalty if convicted.
