Orlando International Airport officials are suing the Melbourne, Florida airport, claiming travellers are being misled.

The authority that governs Orlando International Airport has sued the authority for the much smaller Orlando Melbourne International Airport.

The lawsuit claims trademark infringement and false advertising in relation to using “Orlando” in its name.

Orlando Melbourne International Airport is situated 55 miles southeast of Orlando, Florida.

In 2010, Melbourne airport officials launched an “Orlando-Melbourne International Airport” advertising campaign to promote its new US Airways service to Charlotte, North Carolina.

Website visits jumped from 1.5 million in 2009 to 5 million in 2010.

The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority want to permanently bar the Melbourne Airport Authority from using “Orlando” in its airport’s name, advertising or promotional materials.

It also wants a retraction statement to be posted on Melbourne’s website; and pay damages.

The Melbourne Airport Authority claims the lawsuit has no merit, citing Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, which serves the same market as Boston Logan International Airport.
