Passenger opens plane door on runway at LAX.

A passenger reportedly opened an emergency exit door and triggered the emergency slide before jumping out on a Delta Air Lines flight on Saturday at Los Angeles International Airport.

Flight DL1714 heading to Seattle, was on the tarmac preparing for takeoff when the incident occurred.

Fellow passengers told Fox 11 that the passenger asked a flight attendant: “What do I do now?” after he was told to take a seat.

The unnamed man then ran to one of the doors, turned the latch, and leapt onto the emergency slide which had deployed.

“Holy sh*t. Just as my flight was leaving the gate at LAX a man ran up from the back of the plane & opened the door. Flight attendants tried to stop him but he deployed the slide and jumped out,” wrote Gillian Sheldon, a passenger.

Los Angeles Airport Police responded to the incident and detained the man.

In a video posted to Twitter by Sheldon, the unruly passenger is seen on the tarmac outside of the plane with his hands behind his back, seemingly handcuffed.

The plane returned to the gate where passengers were escorted off and transported to another plane.

In a statement, Delta Air Lines said: “The aircraft was holding to taxi for takeoff when the passenger exited the aircraft and was initially detained by Delta staff ahead of being arrested by local law enforcement.”

LAX Police Captain Karla Rodriguez later told The Associated Press that the man was not arrested but instead “transported to a local hospital for mental evaluation”. She added that the FBI was also notified.
