Passenger praised for refusing to give up seat for family on flight | Secret Flying

“Your travel issues are not my problem.”

Reddit users have praised a passenger who shared his experience of refusing to give up his seat on a plane so that a family could sit together.

Unlikely-Strategy596 shared a story on Reddit on Saturday, asking: “AITA (Am I the a**hole) for not giving up my plane seat so a family could be all together?”

In the post, which received over 10,200 upvotes and thousands of comments, the passenger explained that he was taking a flight home from Greece.

“I booked my ticket specifically to be closer to the front of the plane so I can be closer to the gate when it’s time to get out. I personally hate travelling so I spent a bit more money to be closer.”

Once on board the plane, a family of four approached him to ask if they could swap seats.

Unlikely-Strategy596 described the incident: “Normally I’d be OK with that but switching spots would mean moving back 20 rows down which leaves me at an inconvenience and I would not get my money’s worth. I rejected and said that I would like to keep my seat.”

The mother in the group did not take the refusal well, saying “that I was being an a**hole and should just give up my seat so she could sit with her husband and kids.”

Unlikely-Strategy596 said he responded: “Respectfully ma’am, your travel issues are not my problem. I am keeping the seat I paid for.”

The post went on to claim that the woman continued to make a scene on the plane before eventually giving in and sitting down. The husband apologised for her behaviour.

Commenters responded to the AITA question and overwhelmingly took the side of the poster.

“You get an award for this…because this is the solution the entitled families never offer,” one user wrote.

“I’m happy you told her the truth. She need to hear it. She probably hates flying because she and other her family are terrible at planning for it,” another commented.

“NTA nope, you were correct. If it was that important she would have spent the extra money instead of leaving it to chance and annoying other people,” a third posted.
