Passenger shot in mid-air from the ground.

A passenger onboard a Myanmar National Airlines flight was shot in the face after a bullet, that was fired from the ground, hit him in mid-flight.

As the plane was descending at 3,500 ft to land in Loikaw, the capital of the eastern state of Kayah, a bullet pierced through the fuselage and hit the passenger sat in a window seat.

Shocking images show the bullet hole in the aircraft and a male passenger sat in his seat surrounded by blood-soaked tissues.

The 27-year-old man can be seen slumped in his chair as he holds a tissue to the right side of his neck and cheek to try and stop the bleeding, before he was rushed to hospital once the plane landed.

Myanmar National Airlines said all flights to Loikaw were cancelled indefinitely.

The junta has blamed the Karenni National Progressive Party, an ethnic minority militia battling the government, for the attack.

Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun, a spokesperson for Myanmar’s ruling military council, stated that the shooting was carried out by ‘terrorists’ belonging to Karenni and their allies in the People’s Defence Force, an armed pro-democracy group.

“I want to say that this kind of attack on the passenger plane is a war crime,” he said.

Rebel groups denied the allegation.

The state of Kayah state has seen intense fighting between military and rebel groups after the army overthrew a democratically elected government last year and seized power.

The ongoing civil war has seen thousands killed, and the conflict continues to take its toll on the country.
