Singapore Airlines halts ‘flights to nowhere’ citing environmental concerns but turns parked A380 into restaurant | Secret Flying

Singapore Airlines is converting an Airbus A380 into a restaurant.

Singapore Airlines has made a U-turn on its ‘flights to nowhere’ amid criticism from environmental campaigners.

In September the airline announced its plans to offer sightseeing trips that would both take off and land at Singapore’s Changi Airport.

However, it has now backtracked saying: “An idea for a one-off short tour flight, or a ‘flight to nowhere,’ was also initially considered but not pursued after the review. We currently have no plans to revive the idea.”

According to reports, the idea faced backlash from environmental campaigners.

“We do not agree with the proposed ‘flights to nowhere’ initiative for two reasons: First, it encourages carbon-intensive travel for no good reason and second, it is merely a stop-gap measure that distracts from the policy and value shifts necessary to mitigate the climate crisis,” Singapore-based organization SG Climate Rally said.

“This initiative is symptomatic of a culture that makes consumers responsible for deep-rooted, structural problems.”

Singapore Airlines, however, has thought of a new idea to bring in extra revenue by turning one of its Airbus A380 jumbo jets into a pop-up restaurant.

From October 12, you can ‘reserve a table’ onboard the parked aircraft for the weekend of October 24 and 25.

“With COVID-19 drastically reducing the number of flights operated by the SIA Group, we have created unique activities that would allow us to engage with our fans and customers during this time,” Goh Choon Phong, CEO of Singapore Airlines said.

Suites and Business Class customers will be treated to four-course meals, while Premium Economy and Economy Class diners will get a full three-course meal.
