Six tourists are in trouble after Peruvian police said they were caught vandalising Machu Picchu.
Peruvian authorities have said they will deport five tourists and prosecute another after they reportedly damaged stonework and defecated among the ruins at Machu Picchu.
The four men and two women were found by park rangers in a restricted area of the Temple of the Sun.
The tourists, from Chile, Brazil, France and Argentina, are alleged to have damaged the 600-year-old temple and defecated on the site.
An Argentinian man, Nahuel Gomez, is the one who will remain in the country to face charges after he reportedly confessed he led the vandalism.
He faces at least four years in prison if found guilty of damaging Peru’s cultural heritage.
It is not yet clear which of the six defecated on the ruins.
The group, aged between 20 and 32, are said to have entered Machu Picchu on Saturday and hid among the ruins to illegally spend the night.
Machu Picchu was constructed as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438–1472), where today it is regarded as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Approximately 1.5 million people visit the site each year.
