Thousands of flights flying to and from East Coast USA have been cancelled as Storm Stella hits.

A state of emergency was declared in New York and three other US states as Storm Stella hit the East Coast causing travel chaos affecting hundreds of thousands of passengers.

In the early morning, New York’s Times Square was almost in darkness, due to the snow blotting out much of the sunlight.

A Philadelphia weather service called the storm “life-threatening” and warned people to shelter indoors. Warnings of coastal floods were also in effect from Massachusetts to Delaware.

Almost all transatlantic flights between Europe and New York, Boston and Philadelphia have been cancelled.

At the time this article was published, FlightAware stated that a total of 5,732 flights within, into, or out of the United States were cancelled today. Another 681 flights are so far cancelled for tomorrow, however this number is likely to rise considerably.

Passengers who are stranded in the US who have flights with EU airlines are entitled to hotels and meals. However, it seems that those booked on US airlines must fend for themselves for now. They can then claim back their expenses through their travel insurance company depending on their policy.
