A popular Swiss hotel posted a sign telling Jewish guests to shower before using the swimming pool.
The Paradies apartment hotel in the Alpine village of Arosa in eastern Switzerland, posted signs telling Jewish guests to shower before using the swimming pool.
The sign read: “To our Jewish Guests, women, men and children, please take a shower before you go swimming. If you break the rules I’m forced to cloes [sic] the swimming pool for you”.
Another sign read: “For our Jewish guests: You may access the refrigerator only in the following hours: 10:00-11:00 and 16:30-17:30. I hope you understand that our team does not like being disturbed all the time.”
Ruth Thomann, manager of the hotel, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that the signs were a misunderstanding.
Thomann insists that rules apply for all guests, however only Jewish guests were breaking them. She also clarified that the refrigerator sign was due to Jewish dietary restrictions.
“The sign was addressed to Jewish guests simply because the other guests are not allowed to put food in the fridge, and we wanted our Jewish guests to access the food only at set times” she said.
Thomann insisted that she wants Jewish guests to feel at home when staying at the hotel, however, “the behavior of some of those guests is making other guests feel uncomfortable, and we received complaints so we need to be responsible for all our guests and find a balance.”
The hotel, which is located 80 miles southeast of Zurich, has provoked official complaints from Israel and calls for it to be closed.
Israel’s deputy foreign minister called it “an anti-Semitic act of the worst and ugliest kind”.
