A power cut at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Sunday led to a partial shut-down, affecting holiday travel for tens of thousands of people.

The world’s busiest airport, Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, came to a standstill after a power outage caused travel chaos for thousands of passengers.

The airport lost power shortly after 1 p.m. EST on Sunday, leaving passengers trapped inside the airport terminals and in planes on the tarmac.

Reports say the terminals were pitch black and people had to use their cellphones to light their path.

Those in wheelchairs had to be carried down stopped escalators and stairwells.

According to Flight Aware, by late Sunday evening 1,180 flights flying from or to Atlanta had been cancelled.

Although power is now restored at the airport, Monday has seen hundreds more flights cancelled.

Airlines say that due to the holiday rush there are limited available seats for stranded passengers.

Delta Air Lines have said it would give travelers a refund if they would like to cancel their trip.

Georgia Power, which supplies the airport’s electricity, said a fire at an underground electrical facility was to blame for the outage.
