An off-duty Santa Monica policewoman boarded a flight at Los Angeles International Airport with a handgun in her carry-on bag.

Airport security at LAX failed to detect that Noell Grant, an off-duty Santa Monica policewoman, was accidentally carrying a handgun in her carry-on bag on a vacation to Thailand.

It was not until Officer Grant arrived during her layover in Taiwan that she realised she was carrying the firearm. She informed Taiwan authorities and is now barred from leaving the island until the matter is resolved.

Santa Monica Lt Saul Rodriguez said he was unsure if Officer Grant has been charged with a crime there.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials said in a statement that “standard procedures were not followed and a police officer did in fact pass through the checkpoint with a firearm. TSA expects every employee to follow procedures and holds its workforce appropriately accountable.”

TSA said it is now retraining the employees involved in the incident.
