United Airlines plans big changes to its appearance standards.

United Airlines has announced it will revise its appearance standards for flight attendants and customer service representatives from September 21st.

One of the biggest changes will be allowing employees to display visible, non-offensive tattoos and allowing male crew to wear a variety of visible piercings such as nose earrings.

Male customer-facing staff are also permitted to wear makeup and nail polish.

United said it plans to be more “inclusive” in offering its employees “freedom of gender expression.”

“We’re confident that these modernised and more gender-inclusive appearance standards will provide a more authentic representation of the people and cultures that make United the company it is today,” said Kate Gebo, United Airlines’ Human Resources.

“As the face of United, our customer-facing teammates can provide an even better experience for our customers when they look and feel their best.”

The change will be the first time the airline has drastically adapted its customer-facing appearance guidelines in more than a decade.
