Scenes of chaos at the city’s airport as the Taliban enters Kabul.

Scenes of chaos have been seen at Kabul’s airport this morning as hundreds of desperate Afghans attempt to flee the city ahead of the Taliban’s seizure.

In multiple videos posted online, people can be seen climbing up the outside of an airbridge and chasing a US military C-17 down the runway in a bid to get onboard planes.

According to reports, three people died after clinging to the wheels of the military aircraft, while another five were shot dead.

Victorious Taliban fighters patrolled the capital overnight after a shockingly swift end to Afghanistan’s 20-year war, prompting many to flee to the airport in the hope of boarding a plane.

US forces reportedly fired warning shots to disperse the crowds, however, with rumours spreading that even those without visas were being allowed to travel, many more Afghans headed for the runways.

In an alert, the US embassy warned that “the security situation in Kabul is changing quickly.”

More than 60 countries have issued a joint statement in which they said Afghans and international citizens who wish to leave the country must be allowed to do so.

Kabul was the last major city in Afghanistan to hold out against a Taliban offensive that began months ago but accelerated in recent days.

Over the weekend, Kabul was gripped by panic as helicopters raced overhead to evacuate foreign personnel from embassies.

Smoke could be seen coming from the US embassy rooftop on Sunday as diplomats burned sensitive material.

Last week, a US intelligence assessment said Kabul could be encircled in 30 days and could fall to the Taliban within 90 days. It actually took the Taliban less than a week.
