A man was caught stealing $9,000 in cash from another passenger’s tray as he passed through airport security.

A man was arrested after stealing $9,000 in cash from a fellow passenger’s security tray at Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport.

CCTV footage showed the thief at the security checkpoint standing in a queue behind his victim.

As they both passed through the scanner, the suspect is seen watching the cash go past him for a moment before casually picking it up.

The victim then panics when he notices his money is gone.

Police said he had been planning to use the cash to pay for a sick relative’s medical care.

The thief had allegedly stashed the money in a toilet roll holder and had planned to retrieve it when he returned to Rome.

The thief was arrested as he boarded his flight to Russia and has since been sentenced to a year in prison.
