India’s Civil Aviation Authority has lifted the ban on in-flight WiFi.
Air passengers flying over India can now access in-flight internet services, after the government made a landmark decision.
The Indian Union Civil Aviation Ministry finally lifted the restrictions on in-flight Wi-Fi, paving the way for Indian airlines to offer the long-awaited feature.
According to the new rules, devices are only allowed to connect if they are in flight mode.
The first Indian airline to roll out the service is expected to be Vistara Airlines, who have struck a partnership with Tata group company.
While taking the delivery of its first Boeing 787-9 aircraft last week, Vistara Airlines CEO Leslie Thng told reporters that it would be the first plane in India to provide in-flight WiFi services.
The Government issued an official notification from the Civil Aviation Ministry, which said: “The Pilot-in-Command may permit the access of Internet services by passengers on board an aircraft in flight, through Wi-Fi on board, when a laptop, smartphone, tablet, smartwatch, e-reader or a point of sale device is used in flight mode or the airplane mode.”
Up until now, WiFi in the Indian skies was only reserved for military defence purposes.
